Description:
There are mountain peaks and Mountain Peaks. Zion National Park belongs to the latter and it is all because of its spectacular colourful peaks that lift it out of the ordinary. The colours range from light cream to pink, changing shades all through the day. The park is situated in south western Utah and the landscape is truly unique with its towering cliffs and dramatic rock formations interspersed with scary canyons that literally take your breath away. Natural wonders such as the world's largest arch—the Kolob Arch—are impressive sights you'll remember as long as you live.
The best way to take in all that natural beauty would be a slow drive through the Park on a Zion National Parks free shuttle service. You can take the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive or the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway, or both. The former takes you on the road to visual delights passing through well known landmarks and stunning landscapes. On the latter you get to view the Checkerboard Mesa and the Zion Canyon Overlook, where you see the mile long tunnels that go right through the cliffs. All along the trip you will have encounters of the enchanting kind with various forms of wild life such as mule deer and cute cottontail rabbits.
The Great White Throne which towers royally over 2,200 feet is a famous landmark that will have you clicking madly to capture as much of that majesty as possible. Other landmarks would be the Court of the Patriarchs; the Sentinel; and the Watchman. To overcome your fear of the claustrophobic you could walk up the shallow Narrows of the Virgin River, where the towering canyon walls literally close in on you, so much so that you can stretch out and feel them on either side. This incredible hike is rated number five in a list of America's best 100 adventures by the National Geographic Adventure Magazine. While hiking along narrow gorges with running water, be informed about flash floods and currents that may overwhelm you.
Amid all this natural splendour you also have opportunities to engage in activities other than full-time gawking. Cycling maniacs can take the bicycle friendly Pa'rus Trail that connects with the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive shuttle, on which you can hop into when your muscles stop protesting and start cussing. These are equipped with bike racks so feel free to hitch that ride. If you like somebody else to do all the work, hire a horse and join a guided tour. Enjoy the colours of the season whether it be the wild blooms of spring or the glorious autumn shades.
