At the Rocky Mountain National Park, it would take at least one whole day just to take a break from admiring the veritable paradisiacal sights that surround you, any which way you look. Snowy peaks, craggy mountains, awesome gorges, lush green trees, golden meadows, and icy blue streams—all under an azure dome that seems well pleased with what's spread out beneath. A great way to immerse yourself in all that scenic beauty would be to hit the Trail Ridge Road. This is a must do while at the Rocky Mountain National Park and you will be well rewarded with the wonderful views along the way. This is a 50 mile uphill drive you can take at your own pace. Some overlooks along the way make for great breaks when you can take your eyes off the road and feast them on the magnificence around you. Forest Canyon Overlook, Fall River, and the Alpine Visitor Centre are great places to drop in.
The Peak to Peak Scenic Byway is a route that takes you to the Wild Basin and to some spectacular waterfalls. The Copeland Falls, the Ouzel Falls, and the Calypso Falls are all on hiking trails and have great picnic spots to relax and catch your breath.
You can take a hike on the many trails that lead to high peaks, waterfalls, meadows, and lakes. The variety is astounding. There's also horseback riding which is another convenient way of exploring the trails. There exist opportunities galore for fishing, camping, and picnicking. If you are visiting during the winter season, there are a whole lot of winter sports activities available. Cross country skiing, snowmobiling, and snow play are possible in designated areas. Be warned however, these activities have to be undertaken with all precautions so as not to hurt yourself and others. Snowshoeing has turned into a popular way of exploring the trails in winter.
Those with a passion for wildlife have come to the right place. Mule deer, moose, elk, bighorn sheep, bears, mountain lions, and bobcats are just a few among almost 60 species that inhabit the region. This is in addition to the nearly 300 bird species such as golden eagles, prairie falcons and hawks; reptiles, amphibians and butterflies.
In addition to the normal activities there are seasonal events that might add considerably to your visit. The Long's Peak Scottish Irish Festival, Jazz Fest & Art Walk, Estes Park Film Festival, and the Elk Fest are all fun events that you might inquire about when you plan to visit.
